I had the pleasure of meeting Jerry Jemmott briefly in NY in the 80s but we didn’t get a chance to hang out until a few years ago in Los Angeles.
I was immediately taken by his kindness and down to earth nature. If you weren’t aware of the fact that Jerry helped define the sound of electric bass on many of the seminal recordings of the 60s, 70s and beyond, you’d feel like you were hanging with a beloved cousin or cool, wise uncle.
Reading “Make It Happen” brought me back to that very same feeling. Jerry lays out the story of his development from a somewhat clumsy kid who finds in music the confidence and expertise to intuit bass lines that move the music, the artist and us, the listeners. He finds the often evasive but always crucial component in the groove to “make the magic happen.”
I’m sure you’ll enjoy “hanging” with Jerry and taking in some serious music and bass history while you do. “Make It Happen” is Jerry’s story. Straightforward and engagingly told.
